Tairyu Studio YouTube Hits 17K
Over the last several months, the Tairyu Shakuhachi YouTube channel has seen a surge of activity. Regular viewers of the channel may recall that Tairyu celebrated the 10,000th subscriber just a few months ago, with a top 10 “Forbidden Songs” playlist. Now, driven by new types of videos and livestreams, the channel is racing toward 20k.
In addition to his regular offerings of tutorial and performance videos, Tairyu has introduced a number of ongoing video series, as well as regular live streams, and flute giveaways that have driven views and subscriptions to new highs. At the time of this posting, the channel has 1.1 million views and over 17,000 subscribers.
The new video series on the channel include a pack of scholarly entries on Japanese music theory, a vlog-style series called “Life as a Shakuhachi Player,” and a very informative group of short clips known as “Tairyu’s Tips.” The lesson offerings on the membership side of the channel have been expanded as well–there are now nearly 300 videos in this exclusive area for students. These have all proven popular, but perhaps the real MVPs are the shakuhachi giveaways the studio has been offering.
So far, Tairyu has given away 4 flutes, and there are three more giveaways planned over the next few months. The goal of everything offered on the channel is to demystify and popularize the shakuhachi, and the giveaways are another way to get good instruments into the hands of people around the globe, and bring new players to our beloved flute.
This strategy seems to be working. A recent video titled “The Ultimate Quick Start for Shakuhachi” has been viewed 15,000 times in just a little over a week, and continues to drive new subscriptions. Based on current trends, it looks like channel subscriptions will surpass 20,000 soon. Tune in and see what kind of celebration Tairyu comes up with for that milestone!
