Suizen with Jonen Class

The Art of Suizen: Shakuhachi Meditation and Breathing

Welcome to the Suizen course, where we discover the lifestyle practice of playing the shakuhachi as a meditative tool. In this course, Jonen, a skilled shakuhachi player and licensed Buddhist Monk, will guide you through Suizen—literally translated as “blowing meditation.” If you want to get technical, Torsten Olaffson describes it as "Blowing a Flute Ascetic Non-dualistic Contemplation Practice"

Suizen is not merely about playing music; it’s a deep practice that connects the breath, sound, and body to the present moment. Throughout the course, you’ll explore how breath awareness and mindful playing can create an inner harmony and turmoil that transcends the ordinary. The shakuhachi becomes not just an instrument, but a vessel for self-exploration.

Whether you are a beginner curious about Suizen, or an experienced shakuhachi player seeking a deeper understanding, this course offers invaluable insights into:

  • The fundamentals of breath control and how to channel energy through the shakuhachi

  • The meditative techniques

  • Developing sensitivity to the natural flow of energy and sound

  • Practical exercises to incorporate Suizen into your daily practice

Jonen brings a wealth of experience, blending traditional teachings with modern approaches to mindfulness. Join us in this peaceful exploration of sound and spirit, and discover how Suizen can bring balance, calm, and insight into your life.

About Our Course Teacher

Jonen, The Nara Komuso

Jonen, the Nara Komusō, is a mendicant monk and dedicated shakuhachi practitioner who has spent over 20 years immersed in Japanese culture and tradition. A monk of the Jōdo Shū sect, he has deeply studied both the Tozan and Myōan schools of shakuhachi, embracing the instrument as a path of meditation and spiritual expression. With a background in history and literature, Jonen weaves scholarship into his practice, enriching his understanding of the ancient komusō traditions. Now living as a wandering monk, he seeks to share the wisdom gained through years of meditation, offering insight into the profound connection between breath, sound, and mindfulness.
